Caving

Caves have always been a part of Greek Mythology and History, from the birth of Zeus, the Father of Gods, to the most recent European history.

Three caves are of incomparable beauty in Astypalea.

The "cave of Negros" with unique stalactites and stalagmites, the tradition wants connected with legends of pirates and hidden treasures. You get out of the town by boat. There are guided tours to the cave and the surrounding area.

To the north of the island, north of Mary Thomas, is the cave of the Dragon in Vathi with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. You get the Vathi by boat or by foot (about 2 hours).

Cave of Panagia Poulariani in Analipsi. The tallest mountain in the north of the island, is Kastelanno Mary Thomas. The Virgin Mary with Christ in arms said to form the rock of the church.
